SCR Catalyst Education
SCR Catalyst
An SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system is designed to target NOx reduction. In all cases, an SCR system is only used on lean burn engines (diesel or natural gas) with excess oxygen levels greater than 4%. The SCR catalyst is typically a ceramic block element coated with a proprietary combination of Platinum Group Metals (PGM).
The catalyst element alone cannot achieve NOx reduction. A reactant must be introduced into the exhaust stream. This reactant, typically a type of ammonia such as urea, causes a chemical reaction once it contacts the block. In plain language, the NOx along with Ammonia (NH3) are converted into environmentally safe nitrogen and water vapor (H2O).
The combination of an Oxidation Catalyst with MIRATECH SCR provides the complete lean-burn compliance package.
